American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS)

Message from the President

Dear ACDS Member,

I love the professional and personal relationships that I have forged as a member of the American Contact Dermatitis Society. I love what my ACDS colleagues and mentors have taught me over the years. What do you love about the ACDS? How does our Society make your week better?

Speaking of your week, one of our colleagues, Dr. Andrew Scheman, developed and managed a product that many of us use every week, the Contact Allergen Management Program (CAMP). In recognition and appreciation of his exemplary service to ACDS and CAMP, Dr. Scheman has been named an Honorary Member of the ACDS! Please join me in congratulating Dr. Scheman. We truly appreciate his contributions to the Society.

Healthcare for and research specific to diverse populations and support for our under-represented in medicine colleagues and trainees is vital. For this reason, we are in the process of developing the ACDS Diversity, Equity and Healthcare Disparities Task Force. Watch your inboxes for an opportunity to volunteer!

As previously announced, the ACDS Fall Meeting has been postponed to October 1-2, 2021, in Philadelphia, PA. Our Co-Chairs, Drs. Jeff Yu and Erin Warshaw, have an excellent agenda planned. Please watch for more information in the coming months. I am ever hopeful that I will see your shining faces in Philly.

ACDS has developed virtual events to help our members stay connected, and they are pretty fantastic! Our inaugural event was held on June 11th, featuring Dr. Jenny Murase, Dr. Erin Warshaw and Dr. Jeff Yu. Our upcoming events include Virtual Journal Club and an interactive Board Review session for our resident members. Be sure to check out the specifics below.

It is my hope that you, our members, have had every opportunity to stay healthy and happy during this unprecedented time.

Yours in Patch Testing,

ACDS AMA and Health Policy Committee Update

The American Medical Association held a virtual meeting on June 7, 2020. Unlike prior meetings, specific health policy was not crafted at this meeting. Elections were held and there was an excellent presentation from Immediate Past President, Patrice Harris on systemic racism. The current AMA president Susan R. Bailey, MD, was inaugurated as the 175th AMA President. Dr. Bailey is an allergist from Fort Worth, Texas, which will allow for future opportunities to address interests common to our sub-specialty of dermatitis. The next AMA meeting, scheduled for November 2020, will also be virtual. Although the format will be different from prior live meetings, there will be robust discussions on health policy. ACDS is still on track to become a full voting society member at the AMA House of Delegates in November 2021.

During the public health emergency, which was recently extended for another 90 days by the federal government, the AMA and the AAD/A have been advocating for issues of great importance to us. These issues include the following:

  • Continued safe use of teledermatology with choice of platforms and payment transparency.
  • Immunity from medical liability in the peri-pandemic period.
  • Relief programs including the provider relief funds and the Paycheck Protection Programs.
  • Access to Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Administrative Relief, such as eliminating penalties associated with MIPS in Y 2020.
  • Suspension of the 2% sequester on payment received in Medicare

Chair, ACDS AMA and Health Policy Committee
