Clinical Research Awards Application

Description:  The American Contact Dermatitis Society offers fellowships for the purpose of relevant clinical studies directed toward the subject of contact dermatitis.  Studies that focus on clinical problems or have applications to clinical problems will receive preferential consideration.  These fellowships will not exceed $5,000 each and will favor those in the $3,000 to $5,000 range.  One of the fellowships, the James R. Nethercott Clinical Research Award Fund, honors the memory and achievements of Dr. James R. Nethercott and will provide a clinical research award in the amount of up to $5,000 for young investigators studying occupational dermatology and/or epidemiology of contact dermatitis.

All monies are to be spent within 18 months of receipt of the award.  The ACDS does not fund awards to be performed as part of the NIH intramural research program or awards to private foundations without an academic affiliation to dermatology. Funding does not support indirect institutional costs including salary as a direct or indirect expense for the principal investigator (e.g. trainee/young investigator or sponsor). Under special circumstances funding for travel may be allowed.

Eligible Candidates:  North, Central and South American medical students, residents and fellows, and North, Central and South American dermatologists or investigators within the first five years of their practice, are eligible to apply for these fellowships. Either the applicant or the sponsor must be a member of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Proposal:  Provide a short discussion of the aims and relevance of the project including sufficient detail for evaluation by the ACDS Clinical Research Studies Committee.  Previously published material may be submitted in support of the application.

Curricula Vitae:  Attach a brief biographical sketch of the applicant that should include a recent, relevant bibliography.

Human Subjects:  Applications related to research on human subjects must be accompanied by institutional approval of the type required by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  No applications without institutional approval will be considered.

Animal Studies:  Applications that involve research on animals must be accompanied by a written approval of an institutional committee of the type required by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  Applications that involve animals will not be considered without this approval.

Application Process:  Applicants must be present to accept their award at the American Contact Dermatitis Society Annual Meeting to be held February 15, 2018 in San Diego.  This program is supported by an educational grant from Procter and Gamble.

Deadlines:  The completed application and supporting materials must be received by October 15, 2018 or April 15, 2019

Approved October applications will be funded in April, 2019 and April 15, 2019 applications will be funded in September 2019.

It is essential that all applications are complete and received prior to the deadline.  This checklist must accompany the application.  If the application is incomplete or any of the items are missing the application will not be considered for the award.

Proposed Budget:  Provide a detailed budget as a separate attachment.  The funding for this fellowship is not to be used to provide funding for indirect institutional costs (including salary for investigator or supervisor, travel to meetings, or overhead costs, at universities. Equipment such as personal computers will not be funded. Personnel costs for data analysis, for example, are acceptable. Travel may be approved under special circumstances.

Proposal Instructions

Description: Describe your proposal in sufficient detail for adequate evaluation by the ACDS Clinical Research Studies Committee.  Make every effort to be succinct and use figures or tables to summarize your plans.  Items 1-6 below should not exceed ten pages.  Do not submit a copy of any application prepared for another grant.

A suggested proposal format is listed below:

  1. Specific Aims:  What do you intend to accomplish?  What hypothesis is to be tested?
  2. Significance: Why is the research important?  Evaluate existing knowledge in the field and specifically identify the possible contributions that your investigation may make.
  3. Preliminary Studies:  What has already been done in this field?
  4. Organizational Structure:  Please describe in detail your how your supporting organization is structured to support your research. Please include a supporting letter from your sponsor/advisor describing the nature of the organizational support (including that of your advisor) to your project.
  5. Experimental Design:  How are you going to accomplish the research?  Describe the experimental design, the procedures to be used, and the manner in which the data will be analyzed.  Do not include established laboratory procedures.
  6. Literature Cited.
